Learn to operate ECG equipment and work as an ECG Technician in a cardiology office, non-invasive cardiac diagnostic department in a hospital, medical clinic, or other medical facilities.

Through this program, you will learn to perform electrocardiograms, heart monitoring, and various stress testing procedures. Upon completion of the program, certification is recommended and some states require licensing.

Beginning and Advanced ECG

Beginning Electrocardiography (ECG) Technician students (ECGT 101) will learn to operate a single-channel electrocardiography unit, methods of mounting tracings, fundamental anatomy of the cardiovascular system, associated medical terminology, and evaluation of tracings, including recognition of rates and basic rhythms.

Advanced ECG Technician students (ECGT 102) will learn advanced terminology, rhythms, heart blocks, hypertrophies and infarction patterns, numerical axia determination, and 3-channel machine operation.

This program prepares you for a job as an Electrocardiography Technician. As an Electrocardiography Technician, you will perform vascular procedures in hospitals, outpatient centers, diagnostic labs, medical offices, and specialty hospitals and clinics.

Enrollment Procedures

Students who are new to CCSF must submit an application to the College:

  1. Complete the CCSF online Credit application.
  2. Complete the CCSF Credit Placement Test.  Students who have an AA/AS degree or higher can sign a Placement Test Waiver but must show proof of English.
  3. Attend the orientation or meet with a counselor.
  4. Register for class online or at the first class meeting.

Information Sessions

Attendance at a program information session is advised but not mandatory.  The information session is offered once every semester and posted on this webpage.  Students who are unable to attend may still register for the entry level classes online through the CCSF registration system.

There are no prerequisites to register for this program. Students should follow the course sequence starting with the entry level courses. Each course may have a requisite (prerequisite, corequisite or advisory) that will assist the student along the pathway of this program. 

  • ECGT 101:  Advisory only-readiness for college level English
  • ECGT 102:  Prerequisite: completion of ECGT 101

Certification preferred, however, some states require an Associate degree.
